Exportações de milho do Brasil sobem 221%, impulsionadas pela ausência da Ucrânia

Brazil's corn exports up 221%, boosted by Ukraine's absence

Corn exports from Brazil through ports in southern Paraná state continued to exceed expectations, with shipments rising 221% in the first half of the year amid Ukraine's absence from the market.

According to a statement from the port authority of Paranaguá this Monday, the increase in export volume of corn in Brazil was possible because demand increased at a time when the country still had much of its summer crop to offer.

“With the conflict, Ukraine, which exports corn at this time of year, cannot ship, so countries have to look for corn from other sources, including Brazil,” said the port authority.

The data suggests that Brazil is on track to export around 37.5 million tonnes this year, an increase of around 80% from 2021, as the busy corn export season typically starts in the second half of the year.

At this time of year, Brazilian farmers are finishing the harvest of winter corn, which represents about 75% of national production per year.

Brazil's abundant winter corn makes it a major exporter in the second half of the year, competing with major suppliers like the United States in global markets.

The prospects for corn exports from Brazil in the short term were also reinforced by the protocol that allows sales to China, although shipments have not yet started.

From January to June, 1.9 million tons of corn were exported through the ports of Paraná, up from 591,538 tons last year, informed the port authority of Paranaguá.

After two years of no corn exports, corn shipments last month reached 354,424 tonnes, the official said.
